Garden waste charges

North Yorkshire Council’s Executive has recommended the introduction of a subscription service for garden waste in the Selby area, starting from 28 August 2023. This step will bring the Selby service into line with paid for garden waste collection services in all other areas of North Yorkshire. Subscriptions will open week commencing 10 July with the first paid for collections starting week commencing 28 August. From this date residents will need to display a valid licence to continue having their garden waste collected from the kerbside. The cost is £29 per licence which covers collections up to 1 March 2024. There are no collections from Tuesday 19 December 2023 to Friday 12 January 2024 so crews can focus on collecting the extra waste presented over the Christmas period. As usual Christmas trees will be collected from subscribed addresses in January 2024. Each licence sticker is unique to the property it is registered to so can’t be used elsewhere. Bins without a licence will not be emptied if they do not display a valid licence. The licence sticker should be attached to the rear of the bin between the handles. Information packs will be delivered to every home in the Selby district over a three week period from the start of July. This will set out how they can sign up to the service. Information about the service will also be available at local libraries. Residents who already pay for a second green garden waste bin have paid £26 for the period from 1 April 2023 to March 2024. To continue to have two bins emptied, the customer will need to pay for a subscription for the ‘first’ bin. We’ve written to these customers directly to explain the arrangements.  Residents can make their own arrangements to share bins with friends or neighbours. One person will need to pay for a licence sticker which is registered at one address and the bin will be collected from one address.  Residents who do not sign up to the service immediately should retain their bin in case they decide to sign up at a later date. Bins can also be reused for storage, composting or as a water butt. Residents who do not want to sign up for the service should either compost their garden waste at home or take it to their local household waste recycling centres.
