Trees and Hedgerows

It is that time of year with the sun shining and the birds starting to sing that we turn our thoughts to the gardens. Therefore it is a timely reminder to mention our feathered friends and the law. Although there is no actual law that will prevent you from cutting your hedge or trees, it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of ANY wild bird while it is in use or being built. It will be deemed an intentional act for eg if you or your neighbour know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge damaging or destroying the nest in the process.
